Benjin stared down at me with blackened fury in his eyes. I barely knew this man, and yet I was finding this particular look was a common one for him.

“I don’t understand why you care so much. If you were a smart man, you would send us on our way and have nothing more to do with this insanity,” I spat at him. Exhaustion and frustration flowed through every ounce of my being, and all I wanted to do was sleep, sleep for a long time. I had been attacked twice now, and for the life of me, I couldn’t get a grasp on why this man was so bent on helping us.

“And why would I do that, little witch?” He scowled down at me, neither of us paying any attention to the people that filed out of the room. The murmur of quiet voices descended to silence as the last of them left. “I have my reasons, not that they are any concern of yours.”

He prowled around his desk to the small wooden bar in the corner, pouring himself a generous glass. I watched him as he took a sip, watched as he walked back over to me with fury still burning in his face. I didn’t know what to say, everything that was happening was too much for me to process as quickly as it unfolded. As Benjin stalked closer to me, I reached out and took the cool glass in his hand, knocking back the rest of the amber liquid in one clean drink. It burned going down, adding to the already throbbing sensation I felt in my neck.

“And would those reasons have anything to do with this little power that you claim everyone wants?” I hissed back. A tingling feeling in my hands jerked my attention downward, where the flickering blue flames curled around my fingers. I shook them, snuffing out the flame. He took the empty glass and set it on the desk.

“It might,” he said flatly, eyeing me with a dark curiosity. “How long have you been able to do that?”

I gave a frustrated sigh as I started to pace the room. Exhausted as I was, something felt pent up and ready to explode inside of me. “Since I was a small child. It’s never been... this intense.”

“And your parents didn’t think anything of it?” His tone was scolding like my parents should have known what was lurking inside their middle child.

“Of course not, they thought it was a peculiar talent and nothing more. I can assure you, my life would have been very different if this is where they thought I would end up.” I waved my hands around the opulent study, shelves of very old-looking books lining the walls.

“You have no idea,” he said dryly. I didn’t look at him, but I felt his eyes follow me around the room as I settled against the large windows, leaning my head against the cold glass.

“What is this madness?” I said, barely above a whisper.
